Does a business need a Yellow Pages listing in 2024?

The Yellow Pages once had an important role in business. For many, many years, it was the main source of information for business phone numbers. Businesses would deliberately name themselves something starting with "AAA" just so they could be sure to appear at the top of the listing. It was the main way to be found.

But since the invention of the internet, the Yellow Pages, which is itself a business, has been struggling for relevance.

The way they make money now is to charge businesses significant sums of money (hundreds, or even thousands, per month) to appear in a Yellow Pages listing, which is then supposed to show up whenever people do a search for that kind of business.

The issue here is that your business doesn't actually show up by itself. Users still need to click on the Yellow Pages link to be taken to a new page. Only there will they actually see the listing for your business. That's an extra click. Why would anyone do that when there are tons of regular listings right there?

Also, how are users supposed to know that your business appears within that Yellow Pages link? There's usually no way to tell what's listed inside just from looking at it.

It is not--repeat, not--necessary in 2024 for a business to pay the Yellow Pages a dime in order to appear in search results... as long as they have a good website run by someone who understands SEO. If you are already paying someone for a website, then the Yellow Pages is superfluous. They will try to tell you they're helping your search results. They're not--not if your website is doing its job.
